Thanksgiving flight bookings to Miami fall on Zika risk
Miami is using specialized trucks for the first time to kill mosquitoes that carry the Zika virus, spraying what’s being called an environmentally friendly and organic bacteria called BTI.
The move comes as a surprise after state officials and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention had previously said the Beach’s dense urban environment and high-rise buildings made aerial spraying hard. In Brazil, Zika has been linked to more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly, and USA officials expect as many as 270 cases in Puerto Rico, where local transmission of the virus is widespread. “Six are associated with the Miami Beach investigation”.
Grieco is calling on Miami-Dade County to stop using Naled altogether when they spray.
Gimenez said the number of Miami Beach mosquitoes found with Zika increased over the weekend.
The back and forth continued, with a city leader asking another question.
“If the commission doesn’t want this”, said Giménez, “I need to go back to my attorney, the county attorney, and say, ‘Do I have the duty and the right to do this?'” County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said in a statement the truck sprayings targeting mosquito breeding areas will continue for a month.
Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine has said he believes there are major communication issues between his city and the governor’s office.
