The 12 best dunks from the best National Basketball Association dunk contest in years
Minnesota Timberwolves guard Zach LaVine competes in the dunk contest during the NBA All Star Saturday Night at Air Canada Centre. In all, there were a total of seven flawless scores between the two in the contest with six of them in a row, which has never happened before in the event.
The talent on show at this year’s NBA Slam Dunk Contest was absolutely insane so we’ve put together the best highlights of what people are calling “the greatest ever” dunking.
It’s very possible that, after heading into extra innings on Saturday night, that Gordon and LaVine have exhausted their canon, and that even the best of the NBA’s Contest participants will go back to staring at a blank canvas for hours, trying and failing to come up with something new. A flawless way to describe his performance in this competition: unbelievable.
Riley: A tie, perhaps, would’ve been acceptable for viewers, but it can only be one. “Don’t care let’s go home”.
If you missed it, you are in luck, here is how it went down. Well, he wasn’t done, Stuff starts spinning in a circle. After grabbing the ball from atop “Stuff” the mascot’s head, he brings the ball under both legs and stuffs it in the hole with his left hand. “We were looking in our bag of tricks”.
Gordon started out the night with a little bit of an awkward entrance (though not when compared to Will Barton’s Thriller-inspired zombie entrance), but nothing he did was awkward after that. Trick dunks like Gerald Green (does) – I don’t know why he wasn’t in the dunk contest – he can do anything.
This opened the door for LaVine to take flight from near the free throw line.
Impressive, sure. But was he better than Gordon? That said it was still almost ideal, Jordan style with a twist.
And maybe this is the reason why Gordon needed to win the contest. And then he used Elfrid Payton as prop to get the ball to hit the side of the backboard so he can throw it down with a double clutch reverse.
LaVine responded by throwing himself an alley-oop pass and soaring for a one-handed finish. I can’t do yesterday’s (dunk) under both legs. “KD can dunk on anybody, he’s got bounce and he’s long”, he said.
The dunk contest isn’t back ladies and gentlemen, it’s always been here. LaVine showed a ton of love paying homage to Gordon as soon as he was given the microphone.
LaVine, like quite a few of us, was lucky to have Flip Saunders in his life.
“I’m glad I was able to help the bigs come out with this trophy”, said Towns, the No. 1 overall pick in the June draft. We all loved Flip and his memory will live on forever!
BearDown Aaron, you are number one in our book.
