The 12 Days of Box Office – Day Eight
Over the weekend, The Force Awakens dominated cinemas, showing on 832 of the country’s 2000-odd screens and taking $11.8 million.
He likes to write a lot, as you can see.
Hollywood’s big year is even more impressive considering that ticket sales struggled last year.
“Of course “Star Wars” and “Jurassic World” were huge contributors to this record year, but what made this a truly great year was depth and breadth of diverse content that included a number of successful non-sequel non-franchise films”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak.
Yep, go figure. After less than 2 weeks, the movie has crossed over $500 million at the domestic box-office.
Thanks to a major boost from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the North American box office passed $11 billion on Tuesday – the first time ever to reach the mark in a record-setting year, according to Rentraktracking service.
That makes it the fifth highest domestic grosser of all time and the tenth worldwide, reports Variety.
Only two movies to date have passed the two billion dollar mark, both directed by James Cameron; Titanic ($2.186 billion) and Avatar ($2.788 billion).
Meanwhile “Sisters”, a comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, landed in fourth with complete income of $ 14.2 million. Will Smith’s Concussion opened in 7th with only $10.5 million. Right now $850 million is probably the absolute minimum, with as much as $1 billion possible domestically. Again, that’s the only time of year this sort of thing happens. Many dressed up as their favorite Star Wars characters. The film could reasonably be expected to hit $1.5bn by the end of the coming weekend, but China would contribute only another $370m, even if Abrams’ film broke the all-time record there.
Check back later on this week for full updates on every film in theaters and also that Star Wars thing as this wild week continues.
