The ‘Air Bonsai’ is a Live Tree that Levitates
It should be noted that the Kickstarter project doesn’t offer actual plants, and only the planters. It’s not exactly a cheap proposition, but it’s also a magnetically levitating house plant that hangs suspended in mid air.
Levitating speakers and lightbulbs are so passé: when it comes to floating household items, this year, it’s all about vegetation.
Once funded, the team at Hoshinchu Air Bonsai Garden are going to be busy building bases and miniature pots. While they’re certainly cute, they’re not that easy to take care of, which we guess is the point since taking care of bonsai trees is kind of like a zen hobby, meaning there’s more to it than just giving it water like you would your normal plants at home or in the garden. The creators refer to the floating plants as “little stars”. For $230 you can upgrade your floating planter to one made out of pumice, and there a number of hand-made planters and bases also available in limited supply (most of which have already sold out, unfortunately).
The effect is magical.
Talented Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki doesn’t often get to see his drawings come to life, but thanks to the initiative of a new startup, we’re in for a real treat involving otherworldly bonsai trees.
Shipping live plants can be a challenge.
You may have heard of Japanese Bonsai before.
Currently, you can back the project for $200 in order to get the “Air Bonsai Basic” set, which includes a floating moss ball called the “little star”. The project blew away its original $80,000 funding goal and has attracted over $185,000 in funding so far with 35 days left to run. We may not all have hoverboards yet, but at least we can have hoverplants.
