The American Health Care Act: The Health Bill You’ve Waited For
What little is known about the repeal and replacement of Obamacare is a plan that Republicans have touted for years, and it won’t achieve what Obama’s plan did, which is provide health care insurance for 20 million people who were without coverage.
“After years of Obamacare’s broken promises, House Republicans today took an important step”, House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Greg Walden said in a statement.
The RSC memo also attacked the fact that the new bill will allow the ACA’s Medicaid expansion to last until 2020, saying it will continue to “contribute to the worsening of the federal and state budgets”. It would undo President Barack Obama’s signature health law, dubbed Obamacare, and would potentially offer a replacement plan.
The cost of The American Health Care Act is still unknown.
Major changes would be made to Medicaid, providing the states with per capita allotment per enrollee, giving the states more flexibility to craft and administer their programs.
Just before the plan was unveiled, four moderate Senate Republicans jointly expressed concern that an earlier draft would not give adequate protection to those given coverage under the Medicaid system. Instead, the credits would be based on age and limited to certain incomes.
It also would eliminate plans to increase federal funding for states’ expansion of Medicaid, the insurance program for the poor. It would also ban federal funding for Planned Parenthood and any other medical institutions that provide abortion services.
“Paying for that, people with pre-existing conditions, it was really the key in Obamacare, and that’s why they had the individual mandate, to help pay for the very expensive people with pre-existing conditions”, Heberlig said.
Democrats across the board have promised to fight any changes to the law that would scale back health care coverage.
As you know, Medicaid covers more than 72 million Americans and is the core of the health care safety net for individuals across the country. The GOP proposal would scrap Obamacare’s tax penalties on individuals and large employers and “replace income-based subsidies. with age-based tax credits that may be skimpier for people with low incomes”, The Associated Press reported.
Paul reiterated that conservatives are not going to accept “Obamacare Lite”.
