The Biggest Snubs, Surprises Of The SAG Film Awards Nominations

Mirren was additionally nominated for greatest actress for “Woman in Gold”.

The first signs of awards season are nominee announcements, and there’s cause to celebrate in the Straight Outta Compton camp.

On the comedy series front, the nominated actresses are Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”); Edie Falco who picked up her record-setting 22nd nod for “Nurse Jackie”; Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”); 17-time nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation“).

The biggest surprises might have been in the shutouts: Besides Lawrence and Damon, Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo failed to make the cut for best supporting actor for Spotlight.

The SAG ensemble award is the equivalent of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ best picture Oscar.

Nominees are selected by separate movie and TV nominating panels, each comprised of over 2,000 randomly selected SAG members. Everyone who was nominated was definitely deserving, and there were a few performances that were deserving who weren’t nominated.

“I am honestly in shock and just tickled pink that this happened”, said Silverman in a statement.

Elsewhere in film, SAG saw fit to fill its Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading (film) Role category with naught but portrayals of real-life guys, including Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, Michael Fassbender’s take on Steve Jobs, and Cranston as the aforementioned old coot.

But the emergence of films such as The Big Short (best ensemble and supporting actor for Christian Bale) have made the field even more disparate.

Cranston earned a best actor nod, while Helen Mirren got a best supporting actress nomination for her role as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. “Spotlight” is also emerging as one of the top contenders this year, too.

The winners will be announced in Los Angeles on January 30.
