‘The Blair Witch Project’ sequel to release in September
In 1999, The Blair Witch Project came out of nowhere and terrified audiences with its visceral cinematography and lifelike horror. According to Rolling Stone, Blair Witch director Adam Wingard chose to keep the Blair Witch project secret by hiding it behind the mock title, The Woods, much like what was done with 10 Cloverfield Lane to hide the fact Cloverfield had a sequel coming out.
The reboot was directed by indie horror sensation Adam Wingard and shot under strict secrecy in Vancouver previous year. Yes, The Blair Witch Project remains a tight, tense found-footage wonder, one of the half-dozen (or so) times that particular stylistic hook has not been the sole fascinating thing about the movie that utilizes it (see also: Cloverfield, Chronicle). Barf bags (probably) not included.
To make the announcement even more official, a new trailer, image and poster have all been released.
Blair Witch returns to Burkittsville and the same woods we saw in the original movie, where three film students were making a documentary.
Director Adam Wingard had confirmed that The Woods was a working title.
Lionsgate debuted the new Blair Witch trailer at SDCC, which you can now watch right here (embedded above).
The 2000 sequel “Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2” was directed by Joe Berlinger and followed a group of people going into the woods to investigate the witch and coming unglued.
According to Bloody-Disgusting, Lionsgate has possibly pulled off cinema’s greatest bait and switch as The Woods has been revealed to actually be the next The Blair Witch Project installment, simply titled Blair Witch.
Shot in Vancouver, the found-footage movie picks up after the events of the original storyline, and features James Allen McCune as the brother of Heather Donahue.
Blair Witch will follow four friends as they explore Black Hills Forest outside of Burkittsville, Maryland, where three budding filmmakers disappeared almost two decades ago.
