The Conjuring 2 Latest Clips
There are two interviews in the film, with that scene [featuring Ed] and the documentary crew interviewing Janet Hodgson [Madison Wolfe], and so I shot and edited that in a much more traditional way, much more conventional movie way. With movies like Saw and the Insidious trilogy in his filmography, it isn’t surprising that horror movie buffs are excited for this movie.
“She felt that we were very respectful of what they went through and that we tried to capture the spirit – no pun intended – of what happened to them in the late seventies”, Wan said.
A sequel was inevitable, and it has arrived.
Meanwhile, Patrick Wilson was still shocked by the success of the first film.
This isn’t just a good horror film.
Much like the original, The Conjuring 2 closely follows the lives of the Hodgson family. She’s content hiding, and there’s a great moment in the middle of the film where she sees a insane Demon Nun (Bonnie Aarons) in her home, a spirit that seems to be chasing them even in their own home.
Glossy and preppy Lorraine and Ed descend on a grey, wet London – and not a moment too soon. There’s a constant sense of dread, even when Ed picks up a guitar and performs as Elvis to calm the family from the terror that lurks around them.
If anything, The Conjuring 2 plays as a spiritual sequel to The Exorcist, with Madison Wolfe stepping into the Linda Blair role as the vulnerable Janet Hodgson. It’s standard-issue scary movie stuff – weird sounds, toys turn on by themselves, etc. I wanted to put the audience in the mindset of the Warrens and the characters because Janet says, “It doesn’t want to speak unless you guys look away”. But a single mother in Enfield, England, is dealing with a supernatural entity of her own, one that seems to be attacking her and her children. One of my favorite sequences in the whole movie is when Patrick tries to get the family together. Get on with it, already. This is no mere haunted house movie. “I didn’t know how I was going to live up to the first one”.
The interesting thing about this case is that it’s thoroughly documented – and discredited by a lot of experts. In fact, in the 134 minutes in which the film slowly crept toward its life-or-death climax, only once did I spring in my seat, startled. The explanation is simple and efficient. “They sort of referred to it as England’s Amityville”.
But when it comes to building suspense, Wan is a master. “I think that part of my love for classic older school horror movies kind of lent itself to more character development”. And that is, after all, why we’re here. There is more effects work than in the first film, which relied more on tension and mood. Farmiga is again quite good, as is O’Connor; each possesses inner strength that’s crucial to the story.
