‘The Danish Girl’ and ‘The Revenant’ Receive Oscar Nominations for Best
The film earned a single nomination for best original screenplay.
Also nominated for best supporting actor were Mark Rylance, best known for his stage work, for “Bridge of Spies” and Christian Bale (“The Big Short”). And Ridley Scott’s hit sci-fi epic “The Martian” landed seven nominations, including best picture and best actor for Matt Damon, but, surprisingly, no best director nod for Scott.
On the other hand, Cate Blanchett, Carol, Brie Larson, Room, Jennifer Lawrence, Joy, Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years, Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn were nominated for actress in a leading role. She released her debut album in 2005. The screenplay, adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Price of Salt”, garnered a best adapted screenplay nomination. There is also a lot of female representation in the writing categories, with Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Emma Donoghue (Room), and Phyllis Nagy (Carol) all picking up nominations for their screenplays.
The Revenant, a harrowing survival thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a 19th century fur trapper, topped the Oscars nominations list Thursday with 12 nods, including for best picture, actor and director.
Fury Road boss George Miller is up against The Revenant’s Alejandro Iñárritu for Best Director.
Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs des-cribed The Revenant as a “cinematic masterpiece”, in comments to reporters.
“The Revenant” took home the best drama film prize at last Sunday’s Golden Globes, while Inarritu was named best director and Leonardo DiCaprio won for best actor in a drama.
Along with Mara and McAdams, the best supporting actress nominees were Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl”), Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”) and Kate Winslet (“Steve Jobs”), her seventh nod.
Other movies expected to be in the Oscars hunt are lesbian romance Carol, Straight Outta Compton, about the pioneering rap group NWA, Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies and Room, about a kidnapped woman raising her son in captivity.
“The Revenant’s” Best Picture competition includes “The Martian”, “Bridge Of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “The Big Short”, “Room”, “Spotlight” and “Mad Max: Fury Road”. The Academy snubbed “Concussion” and its star Will Smith, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu.
The box office tent pole “Star War: The Force Awakens”, the highest grossing film of all time in North America, received five nominations – for film editing, original score, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.
Film producer and director Reginald Hudlin, who is co-producer of this year’s Oscar telecast, called the situation “frustrating”.
Industry watchers have been hard-pressed this year to predict which movies and actors will be headed for glory at the Academy Awards on February 28 – the pinnacle of Tinseltown’s awards season – and many are betting on some surprises.
