‘The Defenders’ Review: Is Netflix’s Latest Marvel Show Worth Binge-Watching?
Fans have questioned just what the storyline for The Punisher will be, as he killed the man he was looking for, The Blacksmith, last season.
As for when this new show will air, signs point to early on in 2018.
Many consider Netflix’s Iron Fist to be the weakest of the solo series leading up to The Defenders, citing problems with its storytelling, white-washing and action sequences. “I like to keep it light and keep it cute, so any opportunity Jessica gets to be amusing, I’m all in for”.
I also think it’s crucial that Alexandra be a fascinating, charismatic villain.
However, Ramirez didn’t rule out the possibility, telling us “I imagine that nothing is off the table”. Colleen Wing, already the single best part of Iron Fist, adopted the moniker as her cage fighting name, so it’s already floating out there in the aether. As a threat, they’re a suitable force to pit the four scrappy, troubled heroes of The Defenders against-they’re large enough to feel nearly impossibly big for four people, but not so huge that the entire world is imperiled. Which is exactly what Danny had been struggling to find throughout his whole life. You can expect plenty of rage, violence and guns in his series that promises to reveal much more of his dark past and the death of his family. I think the stakes are higher because we’re now encountering the very heads of these organizations – as we try to say, without laughing, the ‘five fingers of The Hand’. What it looks like, who knows?
“I know privilege when I see it”, Cage tells Rand after a heated debate about rights and wrongs.
Jones mentioning Daredevil specifically could be telling.
Matt Murdock is still reeling from the pain of losing the woman he loved, Elektra (more on that later), and has left his Daredevil/vigilante days behind to focus on being the best lawyer possible. At the very least, it could inspire Rand to make a costume of his own.
And one final punch to the face brings out the Iron Fist, which actually throws Luke across the alley and takes him by surprise. Sound off below with your thoughts!
The Defenders is written in a way that you don’t need to know anything about any of the four members to enjoy this series.
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist have taken their share of hits over each of their respective Netflix series.
Marvel has been using Netflix to great effect. When faced with lagging sales that threatened both characters’ books, Marvel paired the two together into a new comic, which proved successful enough to continue publishing.
Krysten Ritter describes Jessica Jones’s role on Marvel’s The Defenders as sort of being the team chocolate nougat – hard on the outside but gooey on the inside.
Lawler, however, said that “The Defenders” will likely please avid Marvel fans who want to see the four heroes combined. She’s also starred in a few other well-known ’80s movies, like Working Girl and Gorillas in the Mist, both of which earned her an Oscar nomination (in the same year, no less).
