The Eagles’ running game finally found its legs
Yet Sunday, they did not win on a bad call or a tricky bounce or a wind-affected field goal. The Eagles outgained the Saints, 519-389, on the afternoon. Meanwhile, a Philadelphia Eagles win could then elevate the organization to 2-3 with a 1-3 conference record. “So it’s frustrating when you sit here at 1-4 and you’re not getting production out of that”. If the wins come, they come.
Everyone agrees that the Eagles’ offense has been a major disappointment this season, but there’s disagreement about who deserves most of the blame: Coach Chip Kelly? Huff gathered in the short completion, two Saints collided, and Huff took it to the house.
Bradford is one of the two significant changes on the Eagles’ offense who has yet to make a significant improvement.
Tom Brady is going to light up the scoreboard, and the Cowboys inept offense without those two stars is going to struggle to keep up. DeMarco Murray’s 120 yards from scrimmage on 27 touches Sunday almost matched his total from the season to date.
After a shaky start by quarterback Sam Bradford, the Eagles put up 29 unanswered points. Brees’s 359 yards and 2 TDs are misleading in the sense that he didn’t really go downfield, but rather, he worked the defense and nickel and dimed them (with the exception of the CJ Spiller wheel). He has also created a solid relationship with Willie Snead who has been playing very well over the last few games.
In a matter of minutes on consecutive Eagles’ drives, Bradford threw two interceptions against the Saints – both in the end zone.
On the following pages, I award three game balls to Eagles’ players for the Offensive, Defensive and Team MVPs following the game against the Saints. Defensively, the Saints have been having a hard time dealing with injuries again this season. “He’s been there for so long and has such a good grasp of what they’re doing”.
The Saints punted – and their slim playoff hopes may have been given the boot. This time, Ryan Mathews led most of the 10-play, 66-yard drive.
The Eagles were spectacular in the preseason, at least when the No. 1 offense was permitted to play, and the world noticed.
Fletcher Cox was a monster Sunday. Every ball thrown his way has pretty much been caught. “I never had three sacks in a game”. That led to Zach Hocker’s 21-yard fied goal with11:12 left in the third quarter.
It might not have been a straight line, or a bold one, or a proven one.
Against Dallas, 32 of Brees’ 41 pass attempts traveled no more than nine yards in the air.
New Orleans struck first as Brees hit Ben Watson for a six yard touchdown. Rookie Jordan Hicks started in Kendricks’ place.
Hicks did make a nice play and almost intercepted a ball early in the fourth quarter. He still has Brandin Cooks has played well, but for the most part he has been relatively limited. Kicker Caleb Sturgis missed the extra point, leaving the Eagles with a 23-10 lead.
The Eagles will host an NFC East battle next Monday night against the Giants.
TV: 1 p.m. ET, FOX.
At any rate, when Bradford and Brees get together this Sunday at the Linc, it will be like two ships that used to be taking on water, passing in the twilight.
