The Emmy Awards Reach New Low In Ratings
Jimmy Kimmel: (handing out paper bags): “There you are”.
“For me to stand here as not the typical leading man, and to have come home with this, I think speaks a lot about where we’re headed, and I think we can just keep going further in that direction”, said Malek, who dedicated his award to all those who feel “voiceless”.
The opening sketch followed the comedian as he attempted to get a ride to the Emmy’s from various people, including late night’s James Corden and the cast of ABC’s “Modern Family“. Kimmel asked the audience. “No”. “Wow, what’s that like?”
The veteran actor ended the message on an even sweeter note, writing, “Love, Old Maggie”.
Dame Maggie Smith may not have been at the Emmys to accept her award, but that hasn’t stopped her from stealing the show.
Jimmy made sure the audience was well fed during the three-hour show by handing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches made by his mom. No other program has won as many awards. HBO reigned supreme yet again as “Game of Thrones” and “Veep” took home Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series respectively.
Hulu also has 17 seasons of “Saturday Night Live”, including the 2015-2016 season that earned Kate McKinnon an Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy. But those are the kind of comparisons the often illogical Emmy categories force voters to make.
After winning best comedy actress for a fifth consecutive time for HBO’s “Veep”, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays flawed USA president Selina Meyer on the show, said “I want to personally apologize for the current political climate”.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus marked an Emmys milestone, winning her ninth overall statuette and her fifth in a row for best actress in a comedy for Veep – an award she tearfully dedicated to her father, who died two days earlier.
The Outstanding Comedy Actor gong went to Jeffrey Tambor, who plays a transgender woman in Transparent, for the second year in a row.
The movie and miniseries awards went pretty much as expected – but then, shocks here would have been truly shocking. Courtney B. Vance did some politicking after accepting an Emmy for his role in “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”. She also has not attended many other shows where this series was previously nominated. Still, overall, you got some surprises, some coronations, some well-earned repeats, and some amusing moments from a strong host.
Television and online streaming series regularly draw Hollywood’s top talent, who say they are attracted by the genre’s new prestige and creative freedoms.
