The Fort Lauderdale airport shooting suspect could face the death penalty
During an ABC Special Report, we learned that he was honorably discharged from the Army four months ago.
Five people were killed, and six more were injured.
Broward County Sheriff’s Office said the suspected gunman has been taken into custody. “There were no shots fired by law enforcement”.
An aunt said he returned from the Iraq tour “a different person”, MSNBC reported. The suspect was being interrogated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “At this point, it appears he acted alone”, he added.
Aviation passengers in the United States, if declared, are allowed to transport unloaded guns and ammunition in their checked baggage, according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The gunman arrived on a flight with a gun in his checked luggage, Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca said on Twitter. He then stepped into the baggage claim area and began shooting indiscriminately, reportedly without uttering a word.
No flights have been cancelled because of the Florida shootings.
Bryan Santiago also said his brother requested psychological help but received little assistance late past year after walking into a local Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Anchorage, Alaska in an agitated state.
Passengers sitting on other planes at Fort Lauderdale during and after the attack were required to stay put on the tarmac hours as officials gained control of the scene.
Florida Governor Rick Scott was traveling to Fort Lauderdale to be briefed by law enforcement, his office said in a statement.

While the motive for the shooting remains unclear – amid speculation there was some type of altercation on Santiago’s inbound flight to Fort Lauderdale, authorities were not ready to dismiss possible links to terrorism. Authorities have not confirmed a motive. Terminal 2 is served by Delta Airlines and Air Canada. Authorities have not released information on any injuries or deaths.
