The Golden Globe Nominations: As Marvelously Weird As Ever
Todd Haynes, on receiving his Golden Globe nomination for Best Director – Motion Score, “Carol”: “I’m thrilled to be in the company of this incredible group of directors, and so honored that the Hollywood Foreign Press has recognized the creative collaboration that is “Carol” from Carter’s score, to our relentless producers, to the stunning talents of Cate and Rooney”.
Streaming pioneer Netflix cleaned up at the Golden Globe nominations Thursday, leading the TV nods with eight and earning one for its first feature film, reflecting the rise of online studios in producing original content. Ironically, NBC which will air the awards show live on January 10, 2016 has zero nomination this year, AceShowbiz reports. The Weinstein Company had been promoting Mara in the supporting actress category, even though she won the best actress award in Cannes for the same role.
For me, the takeaway from the 2016 Golden Globe nominations has solidified the probable Oscar victor for Best Picture of the Year. Second spot in the list is shared by “The Revenant”, “The Big Short” and “Steve Jobs” with four nominations each.
Mad Max: Fury Road, aside from its best drama nomination, also earned a nod for director George Miller – his first Globe nomination ever. It was refreshing, therefore, to see the HFPA this year nominate actual comedies “Trainwreck” and “Spy”. But, sadly, the Hollywood Foreign Press didn’t make room for Hardy, who helps carry the film as fur trapper John Fitzgerald in one of his best screen performances. While it took three top Globe nominations Thursday, including best director for McCarthy and best screenplay, its ensemble cast is failing to stand out from the pack.
Don’t cry too much for Ruffalo, however: He picked up a nomination for best actor in a comedy and musical for his performance in Infinitely Polar Bear.
Cast member Michael Fassbender at the closing night premiere of the film “Steve Jobs” at the BFI London Film Festival in London, October 18, 2015. Netflix garnered eight nominations, putting it ahead of all other networks.
But Starz, which had two nominations previous year, enjoyed a happy uptick to six, spread across its series “Flesh & Bone”, “Blunt Talk” and time-travel romance “Outlander”, which got three nominations, including best drama, best actress (Caitriona Balfe) and best supporting actor (Tobias Menzies). Her other fall film, THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY, PART 2, passed 500 million dollars in global box office revenue earlier this week.
The Golden Globes rightfully placed Alicia Vikander in lead for her work in Tom Hooper’s “The Danish Girl”, leaving a space in the supporting actress category for… Such questions should lend drama to the Globes, which will be hosted again by its grinning nemesis, Ricky Gervais.
Vikander is Eddie Redmayne’s equal in “The Danish Girl”, and “Carol” is told through the eyes of Mara’s character.
With four nods is Alejandro Inarritu’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning “Birdman“, the frontier epic “The Revenant”, which was nominated for best picture, drama, and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.
The nominees for best animated film are Anomalisa, The Good Dinosaur, Inside Out, The Peanuts Movie, and Shaun the Sheep Movie.
The Globes divide their film nominations between dramas and comedy/musicals too, which the Oscars don’t.
