The harsh numbers behind women’s pay inequality in Pennsylvania
My great-grandmother marched for women’s suffrage.
“It’s kind of ironic to talk about because it’s so recent to today that some of these issues still resonate today”, she said.
On this day that we celebrate women’s suffrage; the day we celebrate women’s equality has not yet arrived.
August 26 marks Women’s Equality Day, the anniversary of the day women around the country were officially given the right to vote.
Almost a century later, president of the League of Women Voters of Washington Ann Murphy said there is still progress to be made for women.
The League encourages active participation by citizens.
We here at Audiences Everywhere are lucky to work with a group of talented, empathetic, thoughtful, and endlessly supportive men and women.
Acker is a panelist for the discussion, along with other influential women across campus including Amy Bix, professor of history, Amber Manning-Ouellette, lecturer in the Leadership Studies Program, and Kelly Winfrey, assistant professor in the Greenlee School of Journalism. Companies must seek to eliminate more subtle barriers that reduce the likelihood that a highly qualified woman or minority is hired, promoted, or given a deserved raise – a goal that a consortium called Employers for Pay Equity has come together to pursue. It will be hosted from noon to 1 p.m.in 302 Catt Hall. In honor of the occasion, we’re shining a spotlight on five women in LA who make the city better by killing the game in what used to be considered male-dominated fields. Every person should be able to live and reach for their dreams free from fear of violence: In America, almost one in four women has suffered physical domestic violence, a cruelty which deprives its victims of their autonomy, liberty, and security, and inhibits them from reaching their full potential.
Susan B. Anthony’s prediction is verified.
“I hope that having a woman president will elevate women’s rights and be an opening to get some movement”. “She was president of the association twice, first in 1905 and a second time from 1915 through the ratification of the amendment in 1920”. In August 1920, Tennessee (by one vote!) became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, overcoming the final hurdle of obtaining approval by the required three-fourths of the states. Women voted and eventually ran for office to improve not only government but also their individual lives. Not true. Just like the fight for the right to vote, a struggle that started before the Civil War and went all the way until just after the First World War, the long journey to an Equal Rights Amendment seems to have taken the same steep road.
Bystrom also brought up Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton recently making history in politics.
“Whatever the Army’s trying to do now, in integrating women into all the combat roles, I really think it’s a tremendous effort, I think it should have been done a long time ago”, said SFC John Bleignier.
“As a Mormon girl, I heard of Sonia Johnson but I was like ‘she’s one of those scary excommunicated people!’ It wasn’t until I got excommunicated myself for fighting for gender justice that I read her book, and I was floored at how nothing had changed”. But in June, Obama took that one step further and organized The United States of Women summit at the White House, where things like pay equity, creating opportunity for women and girls, and healthcare, and civic engagement were discussed, according to The Washington Post.
