The Hateful Eight, Creed, Carol and The Revenant have been leaked online
Channing Tatum was one of those actors, yet his dreams came true when Tarantino cast him in his eighth film, The Hateful Eight. The company he formed in 1991 with Laurence Bender, A Band Apart, might have been named after the Jean-Luc Godard classic of 1964, but Tarantino’s appreciation of the French New Wave is much closer to the film noir gangster dramas of Jean-Pierre Melville than the radical chic of Godard or the metaphysical musings of Claude Chabrol. The scene is beautifully shot and compellingly acted, but it’s also an uncharacteristically adult piece of writing for Tarantino, all insinuation and veiled menace.
Slated for release in USA cinemas on Christmas Day, hundreds of thousands of people will now have already seen Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” and historical drama “The Revenant”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, after both high-profile films leaked on torrent sites days before their cinematic release.
Ryan Oestreich is the general manager of The Music Box, and his theater is gearing up for December 25.
Still, there’s nothing else out there like The Hateful Eight. Based on TorrentFreak research, Revenant is the fifth most-downloaded film and Hateful Eight is the tenth most-downloaded. He’s unfettered because his movies keep making money, but I wonder what the faithful will think of The Hateful Eight, a typically outrageous but even-chattier-than-usual extravaganza.
“Did I feel bad that they’re not going to kiss me for this?”
The cinematography by frequent Tarantino collaborator Robert Richardson is expansive, but for all the insistence on panoramic images, the vast majority of the movie takes place inside a one-room cabin, a location with limited visual possibilities.
When that flashback started up, I actually groaned out loud. He seems more in control because he’s scaled back to aim for some points about race in America (“When n_ers are scared, that’s when white folks are safe”, says racist sheriff-to-be Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), who also hitches a ride in the carriage) but mostly just weaves a simple yarn that indulges his love of language. The idea here, I think, was to slowly increase the heat on a pressure-cooker scenario.
“I can’t beat Woody until I tie with him”, Tarantino said.
Tarantino: The movie that plays in most theaters and most malls and stuff, artistically, everything, it’s the exact same movie.
Everyone knows that with this setup, and with Tarantino at the helm, these eight characters aren’t just going to roast marshmallows until the weather clears.
Jackson, who was celebrating his 67th birthday, introduced the director, recalling how they both used to walk the boulevard and marvel at the stars honoured there.
The movie, too, sits on a divide; Tarantino calls it “a blue-state, red-state Western”. If it ends up not connecting with audiences, I won’t be heartbroken. While I really want it to do well and it would be lovely if it’s popular, movies are for a long time.
