The Hunger Games: Mockingjay- Part 2 has Lowest Franchise Opening
Being a longtime devotee of The Hunger Games franchise, I am quite sad to see the end of the franchise. She has spent every free weekend away from filming the movies meeting with directors about future projects.
I love being busy.
While “Mockingjay – Part 2″ opened at No. 1, the movie’s first-day gross fell short of expectations and was well below the $55.1 million opening day past year for “Mockingjay – Part 1″.
Mockingjay – Part 2 does a serviceable job tying up all the remaining loose ends and answering any lingering questions while also tossing in a couple twists to keep things interesting.
“It’s like, ‘Eat this scab and I’ll give you five bucks!’ They’re disgusting. I guess I’m used to that, so I did feel it so much character wise”. I can, however, reveal that Lawrence finishes the series on a powerful and commanding note, with Katniss a strong and independent role model for young ladies like my daughter. But is this the end we all wanted, and more importantly deserved? And then I had a last scene, about a year later, with my nephews, which was so special. She’s a major talent, but “The Hunger Games” phenomenon overshadows her: $2-plus billion (and counting) in movie ticket sales alone, millions of copies of Suzanne Collins’ book trilogy sold, merch, merch, merch and surely way more fanfiction than we’d ever want to read. For four films now, she has played Katniss Everdeen as a reluctant hero and flummoxed lover, caught in a violent revolutionary war and willowy love triangle. The first picture, 2012’s “The Hunger Games”, delivered $152 million.
In “Joy”, Lawrence reunites with Russell for a story of a woman who rises to power in a family business.
Russell (winning an Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook and being nominated for American Hustle). It’s sometimes hard to equate Lawrence with such a character considering her bevy of work in the recent years from “Winter’s Bone” to “Silver Linings Playbook”, but it works. Suffice to say that I didn’t discover anything that was a particularly huge surprise.
Mockingjay Part 2 wraps a tidy bow on a history-making franchise that emerged made a big mark in Lions Gate’s bank accounts as it did on the movie industry.
“The kids started using the three-finger salute and suddenly that salute becomes illegal and suddenly people are getting arrested, and real life starts mirroring the movie”, Lawrence recalls of the 2014 anti-government protests in Thailand, during which protesters adopted a revolutionary hand gesture used in the films. To her, those kinds of comments just helped make her point.
