“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” Opened With $101 Million
The final instalment of the Hunger Games; Mockingjay Part 2 is finally here. Could Hollywood’s splitting-one-film-into-two experiment (see: Harry Potter, The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, The Divergent Series) be slowly rumbling to an end?
Despite its low opening, the movie is now the the year’s fifth biggest opening. It also helps that the final film in the series had a spectacular final run that paired with American Sniper helped the studio fight back from a horrendous 2014.
Studio Lionsgate pointed out that only 34 movies in history have ever debuted to more than $100m in North America.
“If we live in a world where a $100 million opening is a disappointment, that’s pretty insane”, he said. The journalism drama expanded from three to 20 markets and made $3.6 million – good enough for eighth place overall. Last year’s Mockingjay – Part 1 opened to $121.8 million. “That was not a film”. That’s against a budget of $160 million. The R-rated Christmas comedy took in about $10.1 million. In addition, “Night” will face holiday comedy competition when the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler film “Sisters” debuts next month.
“This is a movie that people love”.
As for “Games”, what accounts for the movie’s opening weekend performance?
“The Secret In Their Eyes” faces fiercer headwinds. “In the coming years, both films will probably merit a “…oh, I remember that movie. Also starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Nicole Kidman, director Billy Ray’s movie centres on a team of FBI investigators whose lives are thrown into torment when one of their number (Roberts) discovers that her daughter has been murdered. The final film in Lionsgate’s series barely passed $100 million, according to early estimates from Sunday.
Despite the weak opening, STX, which bought domestic rights with Route One to the film for $6.5 million, expressed confidence that “The Secret In Their Eyes” would find its audience over the holidays. “This is once again a case of overblown expectations creating an emotional response and a perception of failure that is simply not backed up by the facts”, Dergarabedian said. “This is going to factor into the Thanksgiving play period, and the twists and surprise ending are going to keep water cooler conversation going”.
“But after star Jennifer Lawrence used the film’s publicity tour to trash Christians and Republican frontrunner Donald Trump, “Mockingjay – Part 2″ is under-performing in a way no box office analyst had predicted”.
“The Peanuts Movie” took the third place with $12.8 million, while “The Night Before” took the fourth spot with $10.1 million.
“Carol” will expand in limited release through December, Lomis said. “These are fantastic performances by Rooney and Cate and [director] Todd Haynes delivered some great filmmaking”. Audiences approved more overwhelmingly, giving the film an A-minus grade, according to polling firm CinemaScore. While the box office is up 4.2 percent, the year to beat is 2013 and this year is tracking less than 1 percent ahead of that.
