The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 review
Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, volunteers as tribute in place of her sister Primrose to go into the Hunger Games, a savage competition where tributes from each of the 12 Districts go in and no one leaves until one is left standing. On the one hand, it would nearly definitely be a bittersweet, lovely goodbye to the franchise… but on the other hand, it would feature the horrifically violent deaths of a whole bunch of children, most notably Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) own sister, Prim (Willow Shields). Packed with characters and plot, and given sharp teeth by angry political allegory, “Mockingjay-Part 2” provides a ripping conclusion to Katniss Everdeen’s unhappy arc. There is little trace of the girl who volunteered to enter the deadly Hunger Games three movies ago, and the love triangle that’s existed throughout gets resolved when she finally chooses between Liam Hemsworth’s Gale Hawthorne and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark. His mind is still not right and proves it when the group is attacked. As a result, only time will tell if she will decide to bring audiences back to Panem at a few point.
“Rally’s, but I think when you’re in Atlanta it’s called Checkers”, Lawrence said. Katniss also sees the danger to all she holds dear and begins to see discover the secret of why she has been thrust to the forefront of the war and realizes that it may have been a game all along. It nearly felt forced but hey, he needed to see it through as well. There’s no “previously on The Hunger Games”. But does she really want him?
As with all the chapters in this story, the Mockingjay comes with great loss and sacrifice from all our most beloved characters; now they must fight to the bitter end, and their fans will be with them every step of the way. “I feel more in control”. But if I were to guess what these books were like based on their theatrical counterparts, I’d say much of the good stuff was front-loaded. Hemsworth, Malone, Dormer and Claflin aren’t on the screen long enough to follow but good to see them. Katniss is working with the rebels under the leadership of Alma Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Phillip Seymour Hoffman). With a title like The Hunger Games, you’d think the franchise would leave us hungry for more, or at least satiated. It “should more than satisfy the franchise’s many fans”. And will the fact he’s in handcuffs hurt their relationship if they’re not in bed?
