The Huskers and Badgers in Madison
The Badgers amassed just 337 yards, the Huskers gaining only 305 against the mighty Badger defense.
Nebraska (7-1, 4-1) remains in first place in the division, but the Cornhuskers play at Ohio State next and close the regular season at Iowa.
“I will say everything I know about our team is confirmed”, said Nebraska second-year coach Mike Riley, whose seventh-ranked team dropped to 7-1 (4-1 Big Ten). The college football odds for the game have the Badgers favored by a comfortable margin in this one at home.
With Nebraska facing fourth and 8 from the UW 23 in the overtime, the Cornhuskers eschewed merely going for the first down and went for the tying touchdown. Most importantly, the Badgers proved they have other weapons on offense besides Clement. The Huskers haven’t truly been tested this season and this is a great opportunity for NU to go on the road and have a statement win.
Nebraska’s offense was sluggish for most of the first 15 minutes before Armstrong hit Jordan Westerkamp for 36 yards on the final play of the opening quarter to set up a 1st-and-goal situation.
No. 5 LOUISVILLE 32, VIRGINIA 25: In Charlottesville, Virginia, Lamar Jackson floated a 29-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Smith with 13 seconds left to lift the Cardinals.
Andrew Endicott’s extra point looked ill as it screamed wide left, which could have piled a nightmare atop his missed 45-yard field goal with 1:48 left in regulation.
If the Cornhuskers can play defense at this level, they can challenge Ohio State next week and go on to win the Big Ten West. Both redshirt senior Bart Houston and redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook threw bad interceptions and neither was able to get into a rhythm. Last week against Iowa, Chryst replaced Hornibrook with Houston on a few series, with Houston getting the scoring going with a touchdown pass to Troy Fumagalli.
Facing a 10-point deficit, even with roughly 23 minutes of game time remaining, Nebraska was left with a tall task. They maintain momentum, as opposed to stopping it, as Armstrong essentially did with two first-half interceptions – both occurring in Wisconsin territory.
This weekend is more than just a normal game day for Nebraska Football fans. Two weeks ago against Ohio State, the Badgers dusted off the jet sweep with receiver Jazz Peavy and got good results.
If the Badgers can establish their run game, find some sort of passing offense and cut back on the detrimental turnovers.they are fully capable of winning today. All Nebraska would get is two yards.
Keeping the ball on the ground, the Badgers fed Clement three straight plays on the opening possession of overtime.
That made No. 11 Wisconsin (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) a victor in a season of impressive losses (to MI and Ohio State ), and it made No. 7 Nebraska (7-1, 4-1) a first-time loser in a season of reputedly unimpressive wins.
The two faced off in last year’s Big Ten tournament championship game.
There’s not a ton of history here, but it’s easy to see how Nebraska and Wisconsin could eventually have a pretty serious rivalry. The Cornhuskers are mentally tough and have outscored their opponents by 98-13 in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, Chryst stuck with Houston.
“I’m going to keep scratching for every inch and every point that we can possibly get, so when there’s one second on the clock, we’re going to go for two”, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said, according to AP. He added that he easily could have gone with Hornibrook in that spot.
Third-string quarterback Jeff George Jr., son of Illini legend and longtime National Football League quarterback Jeff George, started his second straight game and went 16-34 for 156 yards and a touchdown.
The Badgers’ (5-2/2-2) two losses came in back-to-back games, by just seven points each – at then #4 MI, and, in overtime, and at home against then #2 Ohio State.
