The Internet is going nuts over Adele’s flip phone
Yet, there is one question everyone seems to be wondering- what is with that retro flip phone?!
It’s pretty safe to assume that if you’re reading this, you are one of the 89.9 million people that have viewed Adele’s “Hello” video, and if you did, then you may have noticed a familiar face other than the British singer.
On Facebook, Adele writes that she has switched up themes between her second record and her third.
Adele’s new album 25 is due for release next month (Nov15), and she is set to showcase her new music in an upcoming TV special, Adele at the BBC.
Anyway, now we have an answer.
The video’s director, Xavier Dolan recently spoke with People about the cell phone, saying he purposely used the vintage phone because he didn’t want to take away from the actual video and it’s powerful storyline and lyrics. “If I put an iPhone or a modern auto in a movie it feels like I’m making a commercial”. “I’m like, ‘Guys, get over it. It doesn’t matter.’ But the real explanation is that I never like filming modern phones or cars. I’m realizing maybe I’ve been more distracting than anything else with that flip phone, but it wasn’t intentional!” Those things: iPhones, laptops, all those elements, to me, they bring me back to reality: That’s not what you want.
It’s a fair point, especially considering the amount of product placement in a few big budget music videos.
In the music video for “Hello”, Adele ventures to an abandoned home, where she reminisces about a former relationship with an ex whom she tries to call numerous times without any luck.
Even Tristan’s using the old school mobile in the video…
Flip phones or not, the video is already breaking records after going live less than a full week after it’s release!
“It says she is stranded in nature, which has regained its rights”, he said. ‘It’s an element of the past. “It’s much more important than the flip [phone] and trying to identify whether it’s Samsung or an AE9 or whatever”.
Well, that’s the whole of Twitter told!
