The Internet Of Things And Its Quest To Cut Healthcare Costs
A NCSAM keystone event at Nasdaq’s headquarters in New York City today will convene a group of industry luminaries for a lively discussion highlighting the challenges of the Internet of Things.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs signed a memorandum of understanding with Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday to set up an industry development center for the Internet of Things (IoT) – the concept of connecting household devices to the Internet.
“The OTRI “… will build upon the groundwork by tracking an even broader array of investigative research on technology issues involving all facets of the FTC’s consumer protection mission, including privacy, data security, connected cars, smart homes, algorithmic transparency, emerging payment methods, big data and the Internet of Things”.
What happens when a connected product loses connection to the Internet? Furthermore, people will seek to harvest data from these devices and platforms for a variety of reasons, most of which are benign and seek to enhance the overall experience with the technology in question. Goodman characterizes consumers who freely give up their personal data as a result of accepting the conditions contained in the Terms of Service (ToS) agreements with Internet companies, in effect becoming the “product” not the actual customer.
Manufacturing is already a major player in the IoT movement, and the sector’s involvement will only grow as manufacturers become more confident about solutions that allay security worries. With the increased ability to connect more devices to the Internet, businesses can enhance efficiency, save money and have better access to opportunities. But if you’re continually procuring stock for a restaurant, these items are intrinsic components of your business, and most critically, to what you’re delivering to customers.
The IoT is a proven strategy, a developing trend, and an innovative technology. Because the IoT has a direct impact on everything from the supply chain to production and post-sale service, the key thing manufacturers can do now is to ensure that their ERP systems are able to anticipate the proliferation of connected “things”.
“The emerging world of IoT has the potential to be a transformational technology”.
Bugra Derre, technical consultant for mobile applications and the IoT at abas ERP, noted that despite the promise of the IoT, the technology really is still in its infancy. The panel is composed of representatives from companies at the forefront of cybersecurity, including AT&T, BlackBerry, Cisco, PKWARE and Symantec. Yet according to more than 2,000 U.S. IT and cyber security professionals who responded to a parallel survey, only 20 percent have this same confidence about controlling who has access to information collected by IoT devices in their homes.
Managers will be able to closely monitor the behaviors and habits of their teams, picking up on things that can be improved and modifying enterprise policies or working environments to match the needs of professionals and help them become more productive. Keeping your phone and associated apps up to date is an important security step. Consumers are starting to entertain the idea of the connected home, but for the moment at least, the television is still the centre of attention. Use a strong password and name the device in a way that won’t let people know it’s your house.
Keep an inventory of all Internet connected devices.
A good IoT platform will provide answers to all these questions, and more, by taking a comprehensive, integrated approach to all aspects of IoT connectivity. Take the time to understand what information your devices are collecting and how that information is managed and used.
“In the hidden Internet of Things, what is also invisible are the countless entry points that cyber attackers can use to access personal information and corporate data”, said Christos Dimitriadis, President, ISACA. “Or their parents being on an insulin pump or Dick Cheney turning off his pace maker chip so it wasn’t recording information because it could potentially be breached, consumers are going to demand that companies put protective measures out”.
