The Internet Reacts To The 49ers Benching Colin Kaepernick For Blaine Gabbert

“There’s no genie that’s coming through the door”.

The 49ers have not scored a touchdown in their past two games, and they’ve failed to tally 200 yards in four of their past six games, dating to a 47-7 loss at Arizona in which Kaepernick had two of his four interceptions returned for touchdowns.

The offensive play calling has also been poor, and while Kaepernick can pick up yards on the ground, Gabbert’s longest career run was 12 yards.

The 49ers probably don’t have the right coach, quarterback or offensive coordinator, their general manager has been on a bad personnel streak and their owner is a ghost. Yes, it’s hard to imagine the 49ers offense being any worse behind Gabbert. Or, do they try to establish the run against one of the best units in the NFL?

What are the 49ers doing?

I think it’s safe to say he’s not an upgrade or the answer the team is looking for.

“We’re evaluating everything right now”. Their shakeup will include swapping quarterback Colin Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert, a source confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Monday night.

That was not exactly a soaring commitment to Kaepernick. The 49ers drafted 10 players this year.

So yes, the QB play is way, way below acceptable.

Furthermore, there have been reports of turmoil within the 49ers locker room this season, as it was previously reported that Davis and Joe Staley were involved in an altercation that centered around Kaepernick.

Kaepernick, who has totaled 286 yards passing the last two weeks, said he can’t worry about his job.

The message the 49ers are leaking out to national reporters is that they gave Kaepernick plenty of chances to succeed and felt that now was the best time to make the move.

When any one of these positions is wrong, it can screw up a franchise. But the 2-6 49ers felt they had no choice but to bench him now for Gabbert. Though this is doubtful, as CBS Sports has him ranked as the number one quarterback prospect, nothing is guaranteed the small school stud.

And each wrong piece is weighed down by all the other wrong pieces.

“You can only control individually what you do on the field, what your performance is”, left tackle Joe Staley said. Experts have constantly said that Gabbert has plenty of potential – the fulfillment of that potential has yet to be seen though. When the 49ers offense can’t sustain drives, it forces the defense to endure short periods of rest between defensive series.

The move is just the latest in the 49ers’ overhaul. “But that’s not how this business works”.

Kaepernick’s passer rating went down each season, from 98.3 in 2012 to 91.6 in 2013 to 86.4 last season to 78.8 in eight games this season.
