The Key Bible Verse That Directly Impacts How These Hollywood Filmmakers
After dropping a ham-handed hint of her marital troubles, Elizabeth is given a good haranguing about her lukewarm relationship to God and exhorted to try harder.
“War Room”, the latest film by brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick, is being applauded by Southern Baptist leaders and others as a picture of God’s power and an effective tool for encouraging Christians in prayer. “Just like the military uses a war room to strategize against the enemy”. However, Straight Outta Compton will beat both films and stay at No. 1 for the third weekend in a row. All four of their previous movies have been fabulously profitable, but, in the Kendricks’ absence, an increasing number of theatrically released Evangelical productions have overcrowded the market, making each such release less of a fiscal sure thing.
Combine such an odd turning point with the expected barrage of caricatures, manipulative music and easy transformations that cheapen the film’s well-intentioned message and “War Room” does little but exist in an echo chamber. Beth Moore, the noted Christian evangelist, is shown in the ads for this movie to be a central player. “War Room” will open in 1,135 theaters, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
The Prayer and Crisis Referral Network, founded by husband and wife team Linda and David Morrison, is also linked to the War Room website, offering prayer around the clock at 844-577-2937. Warner Bros. spent $2 million to acquire it out of the American Film Market.
“War Room” is outpacing the ticket sales of 2008’s “Fireproof”, which remains the Kendricks’ top opening weekend performer on a per-theater average.
The film is predictably shameless about cloaking itself in virtue, setting Clara’s list of answered prayers next to a photo of MLK on her wall. It is now the highest-grossing musical biopic, trumping the Johnny Cash drama “Walk the Line” and its $119.5 million domestic haul. The overall box office was down more than 20 percent from the year-ago period when “Guardians of the Galaxy” was still drawing big crowds. They make their films on a shoestring budget compared to industry norms but they have effectively established their brand credibility with their audience with Fireproof and Courageous knockiTng down $35 million each in cumulative takes stateside. The budgets of new releases “New Escape” and “We Are Your Friends” have not been released, although “Mission Impossible” was made for $150 million.
“This movie is about a couple who have a marriage hanging on by a thread”. People are meeting after the movie singing and praying together.
“When I talk to other believers, nearly all of them have something of a strategy for their finances, for their health, for their children’s education, for their retirement”, Alex said. It also is caused by the pacing set up by the film’s director, Alex Kendrick.
Faith communities can be found in many places: churches, synagogues, temples, shrines, mosques, homes and even unlikely places like movie theaters. “But if you ask them ‘what’s your strategy for prayer, ‘ they look at you amusing”.
