The latest on gadgets: Mother keeps watch on pill-taking
The announcement builds on a relationship between HTC and Under Armour that has seen mixed results as the market for wearables gets legs.
HTC and fitness clothing brand Under Armour has unveiled a new connected fitness system that measures sleep, fitness, activity and nutrition. That’s the narrative behind HTC’s and Under Armour’s new joint venture, the UA HealthBox, a series of three devices that all speak to a single source, the new and improved UA Record app for iOS and Android. This snapshot view of your daily progress is set towards individual goals and calculates insights based on your performance, including a brand new metric, “How do you feel?” The display lies beneath a layer which allows it to turn off when not in use and a gentle tap will bring it to life.
Developed in collaboration with USA fitness company Under Armour, who traditionally make sports clothes and accessories but have also recently acquired the MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal and Endomondo fitness tracking apps, the UA Band works with Under Armour’s UA Record app to track your daily activity, workouts and sleep patterns.
UA Heart Rate is a compact heart rate monitor with an innovative micro snap technology created to make it undetectable during workouts. The chest strap and sensor allow users to better track intensity and work out smarter. The UA Heart Rate strap will cost $80 when purchased separately. The UA Scale is a stylish-looking, Wi-Fi-enabled scale that keeps track of your weight and body fat percentage. In addition to being the first big product launch with strong ties to Under Armour’s Austin office, HealthBox is also the second major launch stemming from a partnership between Under Armour (NYSE: UA) and HTC, the struggling mobile phone company. The entire line of Connected Fitness products is powered exclusively by UA Record(TM), the definitive health and fitness platform.

At CES on Tuesday, fitness apparel company Under Armour announced the first sensor-filled sneakers that track your workouts without needing to tether to a smartphone.
In an effort to get customers entirely absorbed into their ecoystem in one fell swoop, HTC and Under Armor have today announced HealthBox. It’s called the UA HealthBox and it’s a combination of products that includes a fitness tracker, heart rate monitor, and scale, along with the UA Record app, to give you a total fitness picture. The highly comfortable UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 Record Equipped smart shoe figures out when you start to run and then tracks workouts with an installed chip. Like the UA Band, the scale is available in red and black. The company is also releasing its own pair of heart-rate sensing wireless headphones, available late spring for $250.
