The Major League Baseball wants to play a preseason game in Cuba
Manfred’s office has been studying the issue for months, especially since an Oakland A’s season-ticket holder filed a class-action lawsuit against MLB in July for the objective of getting the league to install protective netting at ballparks. “The fact that players who say, ‘No, ‘ go out into the market and get contracts even though the signing club has given up a draft choice kind of says to me we got it right”.
“The end of the year is my deadline”, Manfred said. The only major league team to play in Cuba since then is the Baltimore Orioles, who took part in an exhibition game against the Cuban national team in 1999 in the capital city of Havana.
“I think these are two really appealing teams”. With the NY Mets training in nearby Port St. Lucie, five teams will be within a 50-mile radius of one another.
Representatives from the Astros and Nationals joined government officials in the ceremonial groundbreaking by digging shovels into sand on a miniature baseball diamond. “This is a big draw down here”. We appreciate the great support we’ve received from (Palm Beach) County and the governor.
Rose’s role as a baseball analyst for Fox gives MLB’s all-time hit king a more high-profile role in the game than he has enjoyed for years. “We have proven that we can accomplish so much when we work together”. I think it’s going to revitalize and improve this neighborhood a lot. People will so appreciate it. It’s going to be a handsome park, very welcoming to everybody. His presence on baseball broadcasts, his legacy as a hustling, overachieving player, and his partial admissions of malfeasance have worked to win popular opinion, if not the outlook of the sports Fourth Estate, to his side. “It’s going to be great for the families”.
NOTES: Manfred on any new developments with the Tampa Bay Rays, owner Stuart Sternberg and a new ballpark: “What’s new is that Mr. Sternberg remains committed to the idea that he’d like to get something done in that region”.
“I don’t want to prejudge the outcome of, but I do think a simple rule is probably hard given the variations that exist in our stadiums”, Manfred said.
Included in the conversation was the topic of whether or not netting would be implemented in stadiums after numerous incidents this past season in which fans were severely injured by flying equipment.
