“The Martian” Director Ridley Scott Knew About Water On Mars Months Ago
No, the orbiter didn’t detect water flowing through mythical “canals” once thought to be crisscrossing the red planet’s surface.
Talking about the film and recent discovery of water on Mars, Green said, “Someone just asked me if the R.S.L.’s were near Ares 3 and could Mark Watney have used the water“.
A Mars mission would pose many problems that would have to be “scienced” – and financing a manned mission to the red planet might be the most hard challenge of them all. If we were to found that Mars has life, then the possibility for other planets in the Universe to be populated by creatures similar to us is quite high. They look to consist of a wet soil. Theories are already starting to circulate about what Mars may have been like 3.5 billion years ago and when it was covered with oceans.
“It’s exciting news, because that means that if someday I grow up to be an astronaut, I could go to Mars, get a cup of water and bring it back”, said Jamie.
Breitbart News argues that NASA “timed the release” of their big announcement regarding water on Mars to coincide with the film’s release, presumably in order to create a few extra buzz around “The Martian”.
The Associated Press reports these streaks tend to appear and swell during the warmest months on Mars and fade the rest of the year.
Until now, Martian eskers were believed to be dry-based with no meltwater, despite the existence of liquid water needing for their formation.
The discovery increases the likelihood that there is life on Mars, perhaps in the form of so-called extremophiles – organisms that can survive in the extreme temperatures, acidic environments and anaerobic corners of space.
Scientists have long known that there is frozen water at the poles of Mars, but have yet to find it in liquid form.
Luckily, Scott learned this information after production had finished, so it was too late to scrap the film after NASA’s water discovery. Scientists, however, are very cautious about looking for signs of life on-site: any object we bring there might contaminate the area with bacteria from Earth. They suggest that the water can run in such frigid conditions because the salts lower the freezing point of water, keeping it liquid far below zero degrees Celsius.
