The Mummy Reboot May Have Female Monster
As reported in THR, director Alex Kurtzman (screenwriter of The fantastic Spider-Man 2, Star Trek Into Darkness) and writer Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) are considering a gender flip of the titular monster by making her a female sorceress newly risen from the dead and ready for the 21 century. There are two story options – one that would feature a female monster, and one that would feature a male.
The Mummy is one of the original Universal Monsters, with the first film coming out in 1932 and starring Boris Karloff in the title role (although he didn’t actually spend a lot of time all wrapped up like a Mummy).
Universal’s The Mummy is planned as the first film in a series of interconnected monster films as Universal hopes to build a franchise out of its vault of classic movies. Now, casting is open to either male or female.
As well as The Mummy, Universal are also looking to bring classic monsters like Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, and vampire hunter Van Helsing back to the big screen.
The new film is scheduled to be released in early 2017. If so, who do you think would be the best fit for the role? As the casting process begins over the next few months, they’ll make a final decision based on the actors considered for the part.
We are still a long way off from the March 2017 reboot of The Mummy franchise at Universal, but things are already heating up at the studio pyramids.
