The new trailer for Sundance’s horror hit The Witch has no chill
The place is New England and the year is circa 1630, more than 60 years before the infamous Salem witch trials began in 1692.
In this exquisitely made and terrifying new horror film, in theaters February 19, 2016, the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic, and possession are innovatively brought together to tell the intimate and riveting story of one family’s frightful unraveling. Additionally, A24 Films has released a new poster, featuring “The Hare”. In fact, it was the first film acquired out of the festival.
Watch the new trailer below, via A24. Animals turn against them, crops fail, and one of their children disappears, only to be returned seemingly possessed by evil spirits. As suspicion and paranoia mount, everyone begins to point the finger at teenage daughter Thomasin.
The stylish, haunting drama is set in New England in 1630, where William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine’s (Kate Dickie) strictly devout life sees them largely shunned by their fellow colonials. “As circumstances grow more treacherous, each family member’s faith, loyalty and love become tested in shocking and unforgettable ways”.
Eggers has received tremendous acclaim for his attention to detail in recreating New England in the early 17th century, and The Witch was the recipient of quite a bit of buzz coming out of last year’s Sundance Film Festival – so expectations are already quite high for this low-budget horror movie.
Newcomer Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the accused young woman, who has gone to live with her family at a homestead on the outskirts of an eerie forest.
