The next iPhone won’t switch to USB-C, but the cable might
Apple’s upcoming new iPhone models will stick with the company’s proprietary connector-the Lightning port-for charging and exchanging data, a leading analyst reported. The note appears to suggest that Apple will switch one end of the power cord to USB Type-C instead of the regular USB connector.
Apple Insider added that the Lightning port is marginally thinner that USB-C that permits Apple to gather royalties on its Made for iPhone program, which licenses the use of the Lightning port. It must be remembered that Apple already utilized USB-C ports on the new MacBook Pro so the probability that iPhones would follow suit is high.
The larger and usually more expensive iPhone Plus model could be Apple’s (AAPL) saving grace as it tries to reverse its fortunes in the Smartphone market.
A fast charge in the iPhone 8?
For many, 2016’s iPhone SE was hard to beat: great camera, great speed, great battery life, and great price.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the iPhone 8 will come in three models, two of which will use traditional LCD displays and one of which will use an OLED screen.
Apple is already selling such a cable for around $19 in the United States. Furthermore, the analyst says the supplied Lightning cable will feature a USB-C connector on the bottom for connecting to the power adapter.
Instead, the iPhone 8 will utilize “Type-C Power Delivery” technology for faster charging, AppleInsider reports, citing a note from Kuo. Since the iPhone 5 in September 2012, Apple has released its most significant iPhones at its September event.
The reason is because it’s vital to maintain that data transmission is stable during fast charging and that the device is safe. This would be the top model, likely launching as the iPhone 8. It is equipped with 2GB of RAM and packed with 16GB of internal storage which is unexpandable, where the rumored new iPhone SE variant will come with 128GB storage. USB-C will not have that problem. USB-C is also standardized, meaning it’s not just found on Apple devices like Lightning.
While that’s a welcome change, I’m a bit disheartened to hear that Apple isn’t including USB-C.
