The Oculus Rift is Now Available for Pre-Order
The Rift is expected to ship in March 2016.
For years now, we’ve been hearing that virtual reality is the trippy, three-dimensional future of entertainment, but so far all the talk has been purely theoretical.
The company also reported that Oculus Ready PCs will be certified to meet recommended system specifications; bundles that include an Oculus Ready PC and a Rift will be available for preorder in February starting at $1,499.
So what will this high cost of entry mean for the Oculus Rift, and virtual reality technology on the whole? He also emphasized that the price could have been much higher, tweeting “1st gen VR users are being heavily subsidized by major players who want VR business to grow, though few seem to understand that”.
Pre-orders began Wednesday morning for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.
Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has apologised for “handing the messaging poorly” with regards to pricing of the new Rift.
Right now, customers are limited to one headset per person.
For a smooth experience the Rift will require a PC with at least Windows 7, a Core i5-4590 processor, and an Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 video card.
Oculus was acquired by Facebook in 2014.
The headset packs a built-in mic and headphones, and comes in a nice black carrying case with a sensor that looks like a mic stand, an Xbox One wireless controller as well as the Oculus Remote. It will also come with VR games “Eve: Valkyrie” and “Lucky’s Tale”. That’s in addition to costs associated with a PC that can keep pace with the Oculus Rift’s demands on hardware.
