The Oscars: ‘The Revenant’ will score big, according to oddsmakers

The Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, Feb. 22. After four previous losses, Leonardo DiCaprio seems certain to take the Best Actor crown for The Revenant.

Sam Smith has been nominated for the best original song Oscar for Writing’s On The Wall, the theme to James Bond film Spectre. “Champagne and mezcal will run tonight!”

“We seek resolutions because “Carol” was the best movie of 2015 and the Academy is too conventional to recognize its brilliance”.

When you really put your heart and soul and time into something, and a film that, I will say, is not something that we get to see coming out of Hollywood very often.

The films will vie with The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, The Martian, Room and Spotlight for best picture, the top Oscar award.

“The Martian” has bagged seven nominations while “Carol” and “Spotlight” got six each. Many are surprised that Universal’s “Straight Outta Compton”, which grossed $161 million in the USA, and an 88 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, drew just a single nomination for best original screenplay.

Every year after the Oscar nominees are announced (see 2016’s full list here), we here on Glamour.com’s entertainment team spend the entire morning debating who should win, who got snubbed, and what surprised us the most about the news.

Best-actress nominees include Cate Blanchett for “Carol”, Brie Larson for “Room”, Jennifer Lawrence for “Joy”, Charlotte Rampling for “45 Years” and Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”. Michael Keaton was not nominated for supporting actor but “Spotlight” is competing for best picture along with “The Big Short”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Martian”, “The Revenant” and “Room”. Only rarely do genre films make the cut: In choosing the nominees, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tends to lean toward prestige pictures.

Boone Isaacs, who is black and who has pushed for more diversity in the Academy’s ranks since her election in 2013, acknowledged that more action was needed on that front.

“It tells me that the industry isn’t interested in changing the status quo and that there is a mistaken assumption that only movies about straight white males will bring in moviegoers”, she told the Los Angeles Times.

This is the first Academy Award nomination for Bryan Cranston. All members vote to choose the Oscar winners.

There are always snubs, and this year the talk is about racial bias. Not only is the movie also up for Best Picture, but actor Matt Damon could win for Best Actor. Aside from these exceptions, the unbearable whiteness of the nominations speaks volumes on the glacial pace of change in Hollywood. The film’s nomination for best picture is Spielberg’s ninth in that category, the most for any individual producer.
