The Ottawa Red Blacks Win the Grey Cup
The Rough Riders won the last of their seven titles in 1976, and the Senators won in 1925 and 1926.
Sunday’s game could be the last of Burris’s illustrious 17-year CFL career.
And despite Toronto’s apparent indifference to the CFL, it’s nearly as if the Grey Cup gods said, “Who cares what you think?”
He led Calgary to a CFL-best 15-2-1 mark, the 15 victories a single-season league record for a first-year head coach. Ottawa won the East Division with a losing record.
Uncharacteristically, Jackson bobbled the ball.
“I’m just proud to have been able to do it and proud to have been a part of bringing what we have here in Ottawa now which is the first Grey Cup in 40 years”, said Desjardins.
Burris finished the game with 461 yards passing (fourth-highest in Cup history) on 35 completions in 46 attempts and three touchdowns.
“Henry said ‘If I’m good to go, I’ll let you know, ‘ and obviously he was”, said Ottawa coach Rick Campbell. “We’re looking forward to sipping the Grey Cup with the people of Ottawa”. He was Jeff Garcia’s backup with the 1998 champion Stampeders.
The Redblacks also scored on their next drive, which was capped Early’s 37-yard field goal, and their next break came six minutes into the second quarter, when Jake Harty and Andrew Marshall forced a fumble by Stamps returner Roy Finch and Serderius Bryant recovered on the plus side of mid-field. Nothing serious. I think it’s just cartilage.
Bo Levi Mitchell threw two interceptions and almost threw three, had the ball not slipped away from an Ottawa defender in the first quarter.
Just before half-time, the Ottawa RedBlacks added a 29-yard field goal to make it a shocking 20-7 Ottawa lead heading into half time.
After the Redblacks looked to have sealed it with a one-yard touchdown run by Burris – he ran for a pair and threw for three touchdowns – at 33-23, the Stamps refused to roll over and turned the finish into a classic.
Henry Burris threw three touchdowns, including the game victor in overtime as Ottawa shocked the Calgary Stampeders 39-33.
Burris was stellar, throwing three TD passes and running for two more on a night he wasn’t even sure he was going to start.
Attendance at BMO Field in Toronto was announced at 33,421.
The 104th Grey Cup presented by Shaw caps off a successful CFL on TSN season that saw the average audience for regular season games grow 3% overall, and 7% in the key 18-49 demographic nationwide.
The REDBLACKS will return to Ottawa Monday morning before celebrating their championship with their fans on Tuesday.
Ottawa Redblacks wide receiver Ernest Jackson, left, scores a touchdown against the Calgary Stampeders during overtime at the CFL Grey Cup football game on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, in Toronto.
As the Redblacks celebrated the city’s latest triumph on the field, third-string quarterback Danny O’Brien came over to receiver Brad Sinopoli, named the game’s Most Valuable Canadian, and planted a big wet one on him.
