The Premier League records that are under threat from Manchester City
Lord Sugar has stated on social networking site Twitter that Tottenham Hotspur were outclassed against Manchester City.
Spurs have won three of their last four Premier League games against City, so it is perhaps no surprise that Guardiola is wary of Saturday’s opponents.
City will retain their lead over second-placed Manchester United if Jose Mourinho’s side lose to West Brom on Sunday. To him, the gloating of a rival can not be allowed to vex. Before an occasion in which composure and mentality will be key, Pochettino sought to set the tone for his players.
What they lack in established left-back options, however, Guardiola’s team boast in a plethora of creative options. “It’s good to feel the pain”. It’s always good to see the players that were with you and players that did a lot for the club, or did a lot for myself, to try to help me to achieve all that we wanted. There are so many games, it is not going to happen. We need to win today, tomorrow and in one year and two, three, four years.
But while the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach believes they still have levels to climb to, he insists that City can not go through the season unbeaten in the Premier League. He intends to show they can not get through the weekend with their record intact.
Pochettino had opted for a midfield diamond in a bid to deny City space in the middle of the pitch, but De Bruyne still found room to spring his team forwards with trademark piercing passes.
One of Pochettino’s most notable away victories in the Premier League was against City in February 2016 when they won 2-1.
“One of our players said recently: ‘Wow”. We had a great start but there is still more than half [of the season remaining] it’s very difficult, it’s very hard.
Stones, however, is now out with a hamstring injury and Kompany missed Wednesday’s win over Swansea City with a minor muscle problem.
“When you watch the game and you assess the game, I think the way we conceded the first goal was a massive gift for Manchester City”, Pochettino said post-match.
“We’re going to enjoy it, because it’s a fantastic challenge to play against Manchester City. We are winners and we need to feel we can beat them”.
The only real positive of the game for Spurs came right at the death when Eriksen shot early from outside the box, beating Ederson and granting the travelling side a consolation on a bad day at the office.
