The President, a 1963 Corvette And a Cup of Coffee
President Barack Obama may be shy in press interviews, but it seems he has no problem opening up to comedian Jerry Seinfeld. A attractive 1963 Split Window Coupe, it’s a V8 classic and the ideal chunk of Americana in which to pick up the President from the White House. “I thought: the coolest auto, American made, for the coolest guy ever to hold this office”, states Seinfeld. The president joked that the auto is outfitted with the ability to order a nuclear submarine, as well as seat warmers, to which Seinfeld replied that the latter are “pretty standard”. Seinfeld asked the president in between sips.
He can’t just take a walk, or even drive his own auto out of his house. “So you’re looking around and thinking, ‘What the hell is this?’ That’s how it feels probably the first week”.
Recent press conferences – as infrequent as they are – have shown the president to be detatched, mostly bored with national and world affairs.
While Seinfeld introduces Obama to a 1963 Corvette Stingray, Obama lets Seinfeld sit in the back seat of the presidential limo, a Cadillac that Obama refers to as “the beast”.
Obama told Seinfeld: “I do really well with the zero-to-eight demographic”.
Seinfeld asks the president if he believes some world leaders are “completely out of their minds”.
Seinfeld explained that Obama was the right guest star because “in my opinion, [he] has gotten off just enough amusing lines to qualify for getting on this show”.
“A pretty sizable percentage”, Obama said.
“At a certain point”, he later adds, “your feet hurt and you’re having trouble peeing”.
The president also longs for the days when his “anonymity” was still intact.
In a typical episode of the show, Seinfeld takes a well-known comedian on a drive in a vintage auto to a café or restaurant.
