The Queen, Downton Abbey win Christmas; Christmas Day ratings lowest since 2009!
The final episode of the hit ITV drama was trending on Twitter worldwide on Christmas Day with the final scene, which saw the cast singing Auld Lang Syne as they celebrated New Year’s Eve, an emotional farewell to the show.
Downton Abbey came to an end on Christmas Day, devastating the nation and the world beyond.
The overnight audience data compared with 5.84 million viewers for the show’s Christmas special in 2014, which rose to 7.7 million in consolidated ratings that include one week of time-shifted viewing, and to 8.8 million for its penultimate episode on ITV in November, which were the best ratings for the final season.
While we were all keen to find out whether Mr Bares and Lord Grantham would end on good terms and what Thomas Barrow’s fate would be, the main storyline we were all dying to know the end of was the will-they-won’t-they Edith and Bertie relationship.

He told The Sun: ‘We have a final season that’s as strong as the first because we quit while we were ahead. The programme averaged an enormous 6.9 million viewers, when it aired on ITV at eight.45pm.
Earlier on in the day, Christmas movie courageous had 5.5 million viewers on BBC One in the afternoon and animated short Stick Man was seen by 6.3 million.
Downton Abbey beat an hour-long EastEnders episode which went head to head with the ITV drama.
