The Rams’ offense remains listless
Self-preservation convinced Goff, the Rams’ quarterback and first pick in the 2016 draft, to scramble away from an approaching Dolphins pass rush. An announced crowd of 83,483 attended.
The second is whether they can even really know when Goff is being coached by Fisher and first-year offensive coordinator Rob Boras, neither of whom have shown they understand how to develop a quarterback.
The Rams record falls to 4-6. Playoff aspirations are fading fast because of an offense that continues to struggle to score. Goff’s promotion over Case Keenum, after nine weeks of sitting and waiting, was supposed to improve and expand the Rams’ offense, and it did neither. With the win today and the bye week of the Denver Broncos, Miami moves one game behind the Broncos and one game behind the Chiefs who lost to Tampa Bay earlier in the afternoon.
“When we needed time at the end to make some throws down the field, they were able to give me that and we were able to execute”, Tannehill said.
But after another subpar offensive effort in a loss to the Miami Dolphins, there will be no change in play callers, Fisher said Monday.
He was far from spectacular on a cloudy day that included intermittent showers. Just before the half, Goff found himself painfully sandwiched between Suh and fellow Pro Bowl defensive lineman Cameron Wake, nine yards behind the line of scrimmage. Goff recognized a blitz and rifled a dart to Britt. He made good throws and bad, and he got only 134 yards out of his 31 attempts.
He caught a short pass from quarterback Ryan Tannehill, fought like insane to evade and run through tackles, ended up in rugby scrum of sorts, and then got huge shoves from center Anthony Steen and right tackle Ja’Wuan James to barge his way into the end zone.
Whew! Despite all of that, when the Rams entered training camp, head coach Jeff Fisher said he would play Goff when he was ready.
Todd Gurley’s 24-yard touchdown run – his longest gain of the season – was made possible by guard Rodger Saffold.
“A nightmare”, cornerback Lamarcus Joyner said.
The reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year – a title that feels like a cruel joke at this point – remains mired in an offense that is good for only one or two competent drives per game. “Just nothing was going right for us”. The Rams play with passion and physicality on defense, and they did a great job of keeping the Dolphins out of the end zone.
“We have to learn to finish”. The Rams blew a 10-0 lead in the 4th quarter and look well on their way to another 7-9 season.
Zuerlein’s 48-yard attempt bounced off the upright – his first miss from inside 50 yards this season. After giving up just 88 yards of total offense to the Dolphins through three-and-a-half quarters, the L.A. defense surrendered 152 yards combined on back-to-back scoring drives for Miami late in the game. Devante Parker is a playmaker, Still has become a deep threat, and Jarvis Landry is a game changer.
Tannehill completed 24 of 34 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns with one pass intercepted as Miami extended its winning streak to five games, its longest winning streak since 2008 when they won their final five regular- season games.
The Rams ran four plays before the Dolphins knocked away Goff’s Hail Mary pass into the end zone.
Goff said he was nervous early on but got comfortable after the first series.
Unlike parts of his preseason work, Goff didn’t look lost Sunday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. You’re never going to be ideal.
“I was impressed with what he did”, Fisher said. But neither did he do anything of outcome to help his Rams win it, in his first pro start. If we just keep doing it right enough times, then good things will happen.
