‘The Revenant’ bags top honours at BAFTA Awards 2016
The Revenant has dominated the Baftas by winning three of the biggest awards including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.
Fans of the movie Titanic can’t get enough of its stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio – and the pair obliged by giving us all some snaps to remember. “I feel very strongly that it may possibly be Leo’s year. I don’t know if I said something semi-intelligible; I had notes but I can’t remember anything”, Peter Docter, director of “Inside Out”, admits.
Brie Larson won the best leading actress award for her role in the Canadian-Irish drama Room.
The ceremony, hosted by Stephen Fry, was staged at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, central London.
George Miller’s dystopian thrill journey “Mad Max: Fury Road” took 4 prizes: modifying, manufacturing design, costume design, and hair and make-up. Winslet is one of the best actresses out there (minus Movie 43), and she doesn’t “settle” for anything, especially “fat girl parts”, whatever that means.
“Thank God for time and the passing of it, that’s all I can say”, she added.
Carol, the love story between two women, and Todd Haynes Bridge of Spies, thriller Cold War Steven Spielberg, who were among the favorites with nine nominations each, have finally won a trophy: the British Mark Rylance was named best supporting actor for his performance in Bridge of Spies.
Best documentary went to Amy Winehouse documentary “Amy”, about the singer who died in 2011.
A group called Creatives of Colour Network organised a protest beside the red carpet on Sunday night against a lack of racial diversity in show business.
The film, directed by John Crowley from Co Cork, won the first Bafta of the evening. Emmanuel Lubezki won for Cinematography – his fourth BAFTA overall and third win in a row, and the film also won for Sound.
She said: “I was trying my best to keep it together and I think I just about did”.
Writer-Director Naji Abu Nowar and Producer Rupert Lloyd received the award forOutstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for their first feature, Theeb. “Theeb” is up for an Oscar for best foreign language film. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” gained the BAFTA for visible results.
Italy’s composing legend Ennio Morricone picked up an award for original music for his work on Quentin Tarantino’s bloody mystery tale “The Hateful Eight”, making it Morricone’s sixth Bafta in the category. “The obituary section included tributes to Alan Rickman, Maureen O’Hara, Omar Sharif, David Bowie, Ron Moody, Frank Finlay, Saeed Jaffrey and Christopher Lee”.
