‘The Revenant’ cast celebrate 12 Oscar nominations
Cast and crew of “The Revenant” including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, director Alejandro González Iñárritu and others celebrated their 12 Oscar nominations at the film’s London premiere on Thursday (January 14), saying they were “honoured” to be leading the race for this year’s awards.
– Saoirse Ronan – nominated for best actress for “Brooklyn”, about a young Irish immigrant navigating her way in 1950s NY – to “Good Morning America”. “You know, it’s not often that films like this even get made but the fact that it’s gotten recognised means that we’re going to get to do more like it”.
The full list of best picture nominees consists of “The Big Short”, “Bridge of Spies”, “Brooklyn”, “Mad Max: Fury Road“, “The Martian”, “The Revenant”, “Room”, and “Spotlight”.
It appears to be a no-brainer that Sylvester Stallone will win Best Supporting Actor for his role in Creed, while the avant-garde narration of The Revenant will hopefully be awarded Best Cinematography at least. (“Bridge of Spies”), Paramount Pictures (“The Big Short”), Universal (“Straight Outta Compton”) and Warner Bros.
“Of course I am disappointed, but this is not to take away the greatness [of the films nominated]”, she told Deadline.
Another should-be Best Supporting Actor nominee – Idris Elba.
Although he is up against some stiff competition from Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Michael Fassbender and Eddie Redmayne, fans and online polls suggest that this trophy might finally be his to keep.
Asked what first attracted him to the project, the 38-year-old star referred to Sean Penn pulling out of the film and joked: “It was a number of things, Leo called me, because Sean Penn wasn’t available”.
“Spotlight” earned six nominations, including Tom McCarthy for Best Director, and for two of its supporting actors, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams.
Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the Academy’s president, described the film as a “cinematic masterpiece”.
The Oscars are scheduled for February 28 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
Among the foreign films nominated were Hungarian Holocaust drama “Son of Saul”, Jordan s “Theeb”, Colombia s “Embrace of the Serpent” and “Mustang”, a French production about five Turkish sisters living in subjugation.
