The Revenant leads Oscar nominations
The Revenant leads this year’s nominations with 12, including a nod for latino director Alejandro González Iñárritu, but after The Academy’s drawn out attempts at diversity, #OscarsSoWhite continues to rumble on.
DiCaprio won the Golden Globe award Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2014.
The sci-fi epic snagged six Oscar nominations today (Jan. 14), just four days after winning Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Actor (both, somewhat puzzlingly, in the comedy/musical movie category).
The Oscar nominations 2016 revealed a number of snubbed films for Best Picture. The adapted screenplay category will see “The Big Short’ screenplay by Charles Randolph and Adam McKay, “Brooklyn’ by Nick Hornby, “Carol’ by Phyllis Nagy, Drew Goddard’s screenplay for “The Martian’ and author Emma Donoghue’s adaptation of her novel for “Room’“.
Left on the outside were Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance “Carol” (which fared better in acting nominations for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara) and the N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton” (which still landed a nod for original screenplay).
Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs has been vocal on the issue.
The actor, who has also been nominated for his acting roles in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator and Blood Diamond, said it is unlikely he would ever make a physically grueling film like The Revenant again. Similarly, no women cracked the Best Director race – but, sadly, that comes as no surprise.ABC will air the Oscars live on February 28, with Chris Rock hosting. Plus, the movie did not also get a nod for Best Picture. Idris Elba (“Beasts of No Nation”) and Benicio Del Toro (“Sicario”) will hope to crack the best supporting actor category.
Redmayne, nominated this year for his role as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl, won the 2015 Academy Award for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.
Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, The Big Short; Tom Hardy, The Revenant; Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight; Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies; Sylvester Stallone, Creed. As well as receiving his first nomination for best director, he is also a nominee for best picture as one of the producers of Fury Road. The Martian was the top-selling film for online rental and sale as the year came to a close, according to Rentrak Corp.an industry researcher. Male filmmakers are again expected to dominate best director.
