The search continues for a woman who fell from Bay Bridge
Police in San Francisco sent out search teams for a woman who either fell or jumped from the Bay Bridge after crashing a stolen auto there Wednesday morning.
California Highway Patrol officers responded at 2:06 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a crash on eastbound Interstate Highway 80 on the bridge. When they approached three women near the vehicle, they say one wearing a black dress climbed the guard rail and plunged into the bay.
“Our assumption is that she’s alive, and we’re looking for her to make sure she’s OK”, he said.
According to the CHP, the auto was stolen in Los Angeles.
Williams said the woman climbed over a guardrail and either slipped or jumped about 70 feet into the water.
CHP officers were driving west on the bridge and saw a vehicle spinning out of control on the other side.
Crews are searching the water beneath the Bay Bridge after a woman involved in a crash on the span ended up in the Bay – but according to witnesses, the mysterious woman might have already emerged from the depths.
CHP officers are still trying to track down the woman and are following up on the address listed on her recovered ID, but have not determined if she still lives there.
Emergency crews, including the Coast Guard, hurried to the river to begin a search.
Further proof that the woman – whose name has not been released – lived came when an unidentified dump truck driver went to the Oakland office of the CHP to report that he had picked up a female hitchhiker and driven her to an undisclosed location.
The two other women were briefly detained and questioned, then released, Williams said.
Authorities say the CHP, the Coast Guard, and Oakland firefighters are looking the waters for the lady.
