The So-Called ‘Female Viagra’ Gets Greenlighted By The FDA

Levels of sexual desire vary greatly from woman to woman but the key characteristic of HSDD is that this lack of a sex drive causes the individual personal distress.

However, critics argued that the public campaign had insulted the government’s official system for regulating prescription drugs. Viagra is only taken when needed before sex whereas Addyi needs to be taken once every night.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday gave its approval to Addyi, a pink pill that is being called “the female Viagra”, though the drug carries far more risk than the famous male erectile dysfunction drug. Other side effects can include drowsiness, nausea and dizziness.

The drug underwent clinical trials in 2013, wherein 8 to 13% women reported “improved” sexual desire.

The FDA had twice rejected the drug, which is made by Sprout Pharmaceuticals.

The New York Times said the pink pill will be available in the market under the brand name Addyi starting October 17.

Unlike Viagra, that elevates sexual desire in men by increasing the blood flow to the penis, flibanserin affects the neurochemical balances inside the female’s body to propel sexual desires.

The process of approving the drug has been fraught with controversy over the pill’s effectiveness and side effects, while supporters welcomed the drug to a marketplace full of treatments for men’s sexual health, but scant options for women.

Urological surgeon Dr. Philppa Cheetam cautions those who are already taking anti-depressants.

Still, you’ll have to wait another 18 months before you see any awkward Addyi commercials, complete with women staring out onto the ocean, wearing comfy cashmere sweaters and having romantic beach picnics with their lovers.
