The sports world reacts to UConn’s 100th straight victory
They could very well be 29-0 heading into the post-season and right now they are crystal-clear favorites to win the national championship.
Williams, a former Nevada prep track and basketball standout, best symbolizes this seamless transition from the Breanna Stewart era.
It beat SC 66-55 at home last night for win No. 100 in a row.
Early on UConn was able to spread the floor allowing Williams and Collier to drive to the basket without shot-blocking threats Coates and Wilson there to protect the ri.
The win over the Gamecocks was the 16th in a row for the Huskies against a top-10 opponent.
“We were searching for stuff”, UConn head coach Geno Auriemma told reporters after the game.
Auriemma said SC has the ability to expose some cracks in his team’s facade.
“She’s a really good player”, said Collier about A’ja Wilson.
After allowing SC to shoot 50% in the first and 45.5% in the second, UConn turned a page defensively in the second half, holding the Gamecocks to shoot only 25% in the third and 27.8% in the final frame. 8 Texas Longhorns (rankings from AP Poll). The Huskies instead haven’t missed a beat without the first three picks in the 2016 WNBA draft, cruising to a 25-0 record that includes victories over elite foes Baylor, Notre Dame, Florida State, Texas and now SC.
This was a rugged non-conference schedule Auriemma surely thought would toughen up his thin, refigured rotation.
Overall it was the 100th straight victory for UConn – a record streak that spans over three seasons and three NCAA titles.
STRUGGLING SAMUELSON: Leading scorer Katie Lou Samuelson had a game to forget.
After a close first quarter, UConn expanded their lead over SMU and continued to widen the gap.
“I think we gave up 30 fast-break points, and a lot of those were off of some of our turnovers”, he said.
“We didn’t return any All-Americans”. “We understand that everything that we have here, all the opportunities we have and the benefits that we have about being this program strictly come from what they’ve done to build it into what it is today”. That’s what made us different. This belongs to all the players who’ve played for us. For UConn, discipline is the key predictor of the team’s success.
And then nearly in the blink of an eye, the top-ranked Huskies were on their way to extending their NCAA-record winning streak to an even 100.
“Somebody said to me, ‘What do you guys do that nobody else does?”
“I’m probably the most surprised person in the country”, Auriemma said. It doesn’t make sense.’ I can’t answer it. It was only a 4-0 run, but she knew that UConn had an ability to make even the smallest runs seem like impossible deficits to come back from. “We’re going to lose”.
