The Supreme Court to hear plea to halt ‘Udta Punjab’ screening
The upcoming Bollywood film, “Udta Punjab”, which was in news for its controversial content, has been leaked online two days before its release.
Apparently, the entire film has been leaked on various torrent websites with “for censor” written on the top left corner of the copy, sparking speculation about CBFC’s alleged involvement. This movie was leaked online on Wednesday.
Although congratulatory, the comments of the censor board chief seem jarring considering the ongoing war between the film fraternity and the CBFC. Although the high court has given a clean chit for the film in many ways and has said that the censor board should not curb the creativity of the filmmakers.
The bone of contention for the CBFC was that “Udta Punjab” was showcasing Punjab in a poor light, with a highlight on its festering problem of drugs.
The directorial venture of Abhishek Chaubey will be always remembered for its bitter battle against censorship laws in the country.
The High Court had directed the film producer to make one cut and insert three disclaimers.
Nihalani proposed 89 cuts and removal of any reference to Punjab from the film, including the title, before it could be released across the country.
While Nihalani denied allegations that the board may have leaked it, the film fraternity came out strongly in support of Anurag Kashyap, who also wrote an emotional post on Facebook asking the audience to wait for the pirated copies until after the film has released.
