The Top Gear Team Will Reunite for New Amazon Show
The deal will also see longtime Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman produce the as-yet-untitled show, which is said to be going into production soon ahead of a premiere sometime in 2016.
The trio will host a new series on popular streaming video service Amazon Prime, and it is set to be made available next year.
In a statement released by Amazon, Clarkson couldn’t resist a little dig at the Beeb: “I feel like I’ve climbed out of a biplane and into a spaceship”.
This is a huge win for Amazon and its video streaming service, as Netflix (NFLX – Analyst Report) was believed to be the frontrunner in the race to sign the Top Gear team.
Thanks to the ingenious planning of Clarkson and Wilman in the early 2000s, Top Gear became the most watched factual program of all time, with an estimated worldwide audience of around 350 million. The show will form part of Amazon Prime’s original programming line-up, which now includes the Steven Spielberg produced Extant, and Ridley Scott’s The Man in the High Castle. The BBC said in June that radio host Chris Evans will be the new face of “Top Gear” and has signed a three-year deal to head the show’s new lineup.
“Top Gear” has won a huge global following with its mix of auto tips, driving stunts and jokey banter. Ironic, isn’t it?’ Hammond added: ‘Amazon?
Ishan Vadera tweeted that he couldn’t wait for the new show and Jon Duffin said Amazon had “just got a new Prime member”. May and Hammond decided not to continue on the show without Clarkson.
This new show is a great get for Amazon, who has been steadily increasing the number of show under its belt in order to compete with Netflix and other distributors.
His co-hosts then followed him in leaving the show.
