“In a year with an extraordinary number of great performances by black actors that were embraced by audiences and embraced by critics, for them all to get ignored is tragic”, said Reginald Hudlin, who will produce the February 28 awards ceremony hosted by comedian Chris Rock.
There was widespread surprise that the lack of diversity persisted despite the marked backlash a year ago when _ like this year _ all acting nominees were white and there was only one director of colour, eventual victor Alejandro Inarritu (also nominated Thursday, for “The Revenant”). Yet his name wasn’t called in the adapted category.

Will Smith for “Concussion“, Idris Elba for “Beasts of No Nation” and Michael B. Jordan for “Creed” were among those expected to be nominated but noticeably left off the list.
In addition, this year’s nominees for best picture featured nearly entirely male casts.
The Oscars may choose up to 10 films for best picture. How did Ridley miss the cut?
