“The View” host mocks Miss Colorado’s nurse monologue
The View co-hosts Joy Behar and Michelle Collins have addressed the controversy that erupted Monday when their comments regarding Kelley Johnson’s Miss America monologue about being a nurse went viral.
Instead of showing off a talent such as singing, dancing or juggling, however, Johnson appeared on stage in her nurse’s uniform and talked about the challenges and the rewards of her profession. In comparison to the number of sing and dance routines, it was refreshing and on its own it was moving, relatable, and is causing a bit of a stir in the media. And she earned plenty of fans on social media.
I hope the girls watching the Miss America pageant were inspired by Johnson. The hosts were really amused with the performance of Miss Colorado during the talent portion of the prestigious competition. Several then took to Twitter to argue that the stethoscope could be used by a doctor or a nurse, so Behar’s remark was actually insulting.
The View’s Facebook page is blowing up. In fact, they probably use those things even more than doctors do.
She said that she thought the contestant was wearing a costume.
Brandy McCoy posted this image in Show me your stethoscope. I was like that’s not a real, I swear to God it was hilarious.
The comments demonstrated both a general ignorance of nursing and, perhaps, a worrying indicator that Behar hasn’t been for a checkup in a while, where the doctor generally only makes a perfunctory appearance after medical assistants and nurses do the heavy lifting.
Nurses were quick to retaliate with a hashtag campaign #NursesUnite to support Johnson.
So touching, The Alzheimer’s Association tweeting, “Thank you, @missamericaco”.
