The White House just released President Obama’s vacation playlists on Spotify
Although his some of his ideas might be new, President Obama’s taste in music is old school. And there’s extra to come. So of course, as soon as the White House joined Spotify on August 14, the president already had two playlists ready to share with his country (and the rest of the world!).
One was crafted for the daytime and another chosen for specifically for nightfall, both hand-picked by Obama himself who’s now vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard. He has made headlines on uncommon moments when he has grabbed a microphone in public and crooned.
From Bob Dylan and the Isley Brothers to Justin Timberlake and Florence and the Machine, Obama’s summer selections are pretty eclectic. The two playlists, offered by…
President Barack Obama is the definition of cool.
Following up on his trip to India earlier this year, Obama also took along Pulitzer Prize victor Jhumpa Lahiri’s “The Lowland”, set in Kolkata. Pianoman Ray Charles gets a nod with “You Don’t Know Me” as does saxophonist John Coltrane with his rendition of “My Favorite Things”. No Sheryl Crow, despite Obama’s previously stated affinity; Coldplay’s “Paradise” is the uncool outlier here. The second however makes our inner fan girls squeal – “Superpower” by Beyoncé and Frank Ocean. His lapses into Americana are brief but well chosen, like folk/bluegrass singer Aoife O’Donavan’s steel guitar-driven “Red & White & Blue & Gold“, a sweet and virtually unheard 4th of July anthem. Obama showcased his own singing ability just last month when he sang a rendition of “Amazing Grace” at the South Carolina funeral for Senator Clementa Pinckney.
Lahiri is a member of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, appointed by Obama.
