THEIR VIEW: Donald Trump was wrong in his Khan criticism
Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain has issued an extensive statement denouncing Donald Trump’s comments criticizing the parents of a Muslim Army captain killed in Iraq. John McCain said in a statement that the fact Trump won his party’s nomination doesn’t give him “unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us”.
Ayotte declared she was “appalled” by Trump’s spat with the Khans.
According to reports, the families of over 23 slain USA soldiers have asked Trump to issue and unconditional apology to the Khan family, calling his remarks against them “repugnant and personally offensive”. Kelly Ayotte said she was “appalled” by Trump and his “gall to compare his own sacrifices to those of a Gold Star family”. “I said nice things about the son and I feel that very strongly but of course I was hit very hard from the stage and you know it’s just one of those things but no I don’t regret anything”, he said.
The burial site, marked by a star and crescent, is surrounded by flowers placed by strangers following the family’s powerful rebuke of Trump at the Democratic National Convention last Thursday.
Khizr Khan, a Harvard-educated lawyer whose son died in a 2004 suicide bombing in Iraq, went head to head with the insult-dishing White House candidate in a confrontation that has dominated the U.S. news cycle for days.
Ryan condemned any criticism of Muslim Americans who serve their country, while Ayotte declared she was “appalled” by Trump’s spat with the Khans.
Obama described his feelings about Trump as unprecedented, recalling disagreements with previous GOP presidential nominees Sen.
“There has to be a point in which you say, this is not somebody I can support for president of the United States”. I can not emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement.
“As a veteran, I can’t imagine what it would be like if Donald Trump treated my mom that way”.
“Donald Trump must honor and respect this most fundamental value”, Murkowski said in a written statement.
It is time for Donald Trump to set the example for our country and the future of the Republican Party.
Embracing religion along with the military is in keeping with the overall strategy of the Democrats in the post-convention period, which is to outflank the Trump campaign on the right and seek to win sections of the Republican Party either to support Clinton openly or at least to distance themselves from Trump.
Trump had criticized Khan’s speech and subsequent TV appearances via Twitter, but later followed up saying that “story is not about Mr. Khan… but rather RADICAL ISLAMIC TERRORISM and the U.S. Get smart!”
Trump’s refusal to back Ryan exposed anew the deep divisions within the GOP and underscored that the businessman rarely plays by the traditional political playbook.
Trump drew similar opprobrium a year ago when he said McCain, who as a naval aviator was shot down and taken prisoner during the Vietnam War, was not a hero because he had been captured.
The president said his opposition to Trump is about more than policy differences.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Trump had not yet responded.
