Top European Union official Donald Tusk is congratulating Theresa May on her appointment as Britain’s new prime minister, saying that he looks forward to “a fruitful working relationship”.
She has now become Britain’s 75th Prime Minister. In his final appearance in Parliament as Prime Minister, Cameron opened with the quip that “apart from one meeting in the afternoon with the Queen, my diary is remarkably light”.
Cameron gave a short speech as he left the Downing Street office for the last time.
Taking his last Cabinet meeting, the outgoing PM spoke of his “honour and pleasure” at having served for six years and told colleagues Mrs May was “the right person to lead the country wisely through the hard times ahead”.

Earlier this evening, she was driven to Buckingham Palace where the Queen granted her an audience.
Pictures were released of the visit, during which Theresa May curtsied before the Queen and kissed her hand.
May, 59, has been Britains Home Secretary in charge of immigration and law and order for the past six years. She was a high-profile supporter of the “Remain” camp in the referendum.
Mrs May posed with husband Philip on the steps of No 10, laughing and waving to the world’s press, before turning to enter her new home.
She is under pressure from pro-Brexit Conservatives and other European Union leaders to start formal exit talks with the bloc.
